Highest per capita state NDP through organic farming

1. Sikkim is one of the most brilliant and also one of the most underrated State of India. However you will be shocked to know that Sikkim has higher per capita net state product and Gross state domestic product than the economic powerhouses like Maharashtra and Gujarat. Have you ever wondered why? Before understanding the reason let's see some facts:-

  (a) Per capita Net Domestic product

        (i) Maharashtra - 1.9 lakhs

        (ii) Gujarat - 2.12 lakhs

        (iii) Sikkim - 4.2 lakhs

  (b) Gross state domestic product from 2004-12

        (i) Maharashtra - 435% raise

        (ii) Gujarat - 654% raise

        (iii) Sikkim - 1670% raise

2. The reason behind these staggering numbers is ORGANIC FARMING or REGENERATIVE FARMING. Yes you read it right it's because of the organic farming. This kind of farming made one of the so called smallest state of India to beat the economic giants. In the following sections we shall understand how Sikkim is the first state to become completely organic in the world and 5 ways to achieve it.

Sikkim became the first completely organic state in India by gradually transitioning its agricultural practices to be fully organic. This initiative began in 2003 when Sikkim adopted a policy to eliminate the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The state government provided incentives and training to farmers to adopt organic farming methods. By 2016, Sikkim achieved its goal of being 100% organic state. Methods used were:-

  (a) Policy Implementation: Sikkim's government formulated and implemented a comprehensive policy in 2003 to transition the state's agriculture to organic practices. This policy laid the foundation for the shift towards organic farming.

  (b) Subsidies and Incentives: The state government provided subsidies, financial support, and incentives to farmers who adopted organic farming methods. This helped encourage farmers to make the transition by easing the financial burden associated with the initial changes.

  (c) Training and Awareness: Extensive training programs were conducted for farmers to educate them about organic farming techniques, soil health management, composting, pest control, and other sustainable practices. This created awareness and built the capacity of farmers to implement organic methods effectively.

  (d) Regulation of Synthetic Inputs: Sikkim banned the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, ensuring strict enforcement of this ban. This step prevented the contamination of soil, water, and crops with harmful chemicals, and gradually improved the health of the ecosystem.

  (e) Certification Process: Sikkim pursued organic certification through recognized agencies, ensuring that its produce met the required standards. This certification provided credibility and trust in Sikkim's organic products, boosting their marketability both domestically and internationally.

3. CONCLUSION

These combined efforts, along with the commitment of the government and the cooperation of farmers, contributed to Sikkim's successful transition to becoming a fully organic state.
